It has been a real challenge for us over the last few weeks.
The soil is very dry. It’s impossible to stick a shovel in it.
No matter how much work I did in my garden, all that careful sowing could be in vain if the soil is dry.
Water is very important to plant growth and is taken up through the roots from the soil. Too little water will not let plant roots grow deep.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a plant that I can just simply put into the ground and leave to grown on its own.
It was quite difficult to plant seeds and bulbs in this dry soil, so I had to water the soil thoroughly and to wait a day before planting. I did give a gentle watering after having finished planting the seeds and bulbs.
Seeds need a healthy soil, sunlight and water to become healthy and strong plants.
This past weeks we had some very windy weather too, which dries out soil.
I water my flowers by hand, soaking them thoroughly one time each day.
Plants and gardens need the rain. No rain, no planting.
Nothing would be better than a long-duration rain that will nourish the plants.
I woke up to rain this morning and thought about how thankful I was. I planted recently and now I don’t have to water! I hope you get a nice refreshing rain soon, though not too much!
Here in central Louisiana, we were inundated with rain yesterday! I had to go to town (40 something miles away) and within 2 hours, 4-5 inches of rain fell. Needless to say, I had a little anxiety trying to get back home.
I noticed by your photos that you don’t use mulch around your plants. I’m thinking that would help your dry soil a great deal.
blessings!
Wish I could send you some of our water, between the slow snow melt and the recent rain, our brooks and streams are gushing and the earth is almost too wet to plant!
Drought is such a sad state to live in~
We are having plenty of rain here at the moment – a very soggy autumn – I hope it rains for you soon 🙂
I am begging for rain too, as I empty all the rainwater butts.
We had rain this weekend, very much needed rain. Hope you have a good soaking soon.
Bill Shatner says we need a water pipe from the Pacific NW to help California. Go Bill. Maybe we need a Kickstarter campaign. Thanks for reading my garden post, I’m off to a Rain Dance.

It rained here in Virginia these past two days. Wow! The tulips are blooming beautifully despite the fact that there’s no rain. You did such a great job taking care of your flowers. Beautiful. ❤
