The Château of Chenonceau is situated in the Centre Val de Loire region and is one of the most visited castle in France. The châteaux is built on the river Cher and is famous for its amazing gardens, art collections, late Gothic and Early Renaissance architecture.
The châteaux was used as a military hospital during First World War.
Catherine de Medici and Diane de Poitiers knew how to design unique and elegant gardens.
Diane de Poitiers constructed the arched bridges and planted the flower and vegetable gardens. Here you will find violas, daisies, petunias, dahlias, roses, tobacco and verveine. After the death of King Henry II, Catherine de Medici expelled Diane de Poitiers and made Chenonceau her own residence. Queen Catherine added a new series of gardens, with climbing rose trees, orange trees and flower borders on the edge of the moat.
The Green Garden was designed by Bernard Palissy.
In the Green Garden you may find magnolias, plane trees, cedar trees, sequoias, douglas fir trees, spanish fir tree, acacia and holm oak tree.
Great photos! We are going there at the end of this month. Thank you for the tips.
Thank you! It is an amazing place!
We have visited the Loire Valley in 2012. The famous châteaux and gardens are breathtaking. I will post soon about them 🙂
Hope you will enjoy your stay in France!
Thank you : ) Actually we planned to visit the castle in 2012 and also in 2013 but then canceled because of the bad weather. I hope we will be lucky this time.
I hope that it will work this time 🙂
Are you planning to visit also other castles in the region?
I would recommend you Château de Chambord, Château d’Amboise, Château de Blois, Château de Cheverny and Meung-sur-Loire.
Yes, we will also go to Chateau de Blois and Chateau de Chambord. As we have only 3 days in Blois, so I think 3 are enough : ) Thank you for the suggestion.
You are welcome!
Have fun! 🙂
it wasn’t the irght time for us to see all these flowers, we only saw the purple ones.
The purple ones are also amazing 🙂
Oh, this is beautiful! I will be in France in July and I am going to visit. Do you know the view of the Chateau from across the river? Thank you for following my explorations of London with Bradshaw’s Hand Book
I am sure you will enjoy your visit in France. Will you visit also the other chateaux in the Loire Valley?
By the way, you have a very interesting blog 🙂
Amazing–I’ve been wanting to visit that part of France, and your photos show why!
Thank you for visiting my blog!
Definitely, the Loire Valley is an amazing place to visit. Each chateau is beautiful!
Magnificent! It must take a small army of persons to maintain such beautiful gardens. Are there flowers in 3 seasons? This place is now on my ‘bucket’ list.
Thanks for visiting my blog 🙂
You should definitely visit this chateau! Yes, there are flowers in 3 seasons. We were there at the end of September and the gardens were still amazing.
The best thing is that you will find fresh flower bouquets in each room of the chateau 🙂
I visited Chenonceau in 1997 – riding there on my Honda Transalp from London UK.
It really impressed me and I took a boat out on the lake around the chateau. I wrote this in mermory of that wonderful visit:
CHENONCEAUX
This Chateau on the waters I approach
through prolonged avenues of horse chestnuts;
along drowsy banks weeping willows broach
mirror-like river diamond sun cuts.
Seven arches convey a Fay’s romance
over the darling flow in white spume
while above summer’s light clouds mare-like prance
about lone princess’s garret bedroom.
Diana’s garden, mystic geometry,
and turrets missiled into the blue space
adorn a courtly love’s stiff symmetry
while in the woods distant horns sound the chase
My paddles cast circles as swans glide past;
her place is in mine: our hearts touched at last.
You must have been really impressed! Your poem is so beautiful 🙂
